iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 plus availability, specifications, price and new features.

25/09/2014

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus as expected yesterday at their much obsessed launch. The biggest change that has happened is possibly the size of both the new models (4.7-inches for the iPhone 6 display and 5.5-inches display for the iPhone 6 plus); note that the iPhone 5s was .7 inches smaller than the iPhone 6. However there are other big changes which I will be talking about below.

Size, weight and mobility

1

iPhone 6

The leaks were correct, there has been a lot of hype with the size of the phones; personally the size seems perfect for general use. 4.7-inches is not too big, or small either, but it all depends on personal preference. The weight of the iPhone 6 is 129g (4.55 ounces) and the volume has increased by only 16% which is a minor increase from the iPhone 5s considering the size of the iPhone 6 has increased by .7-inches.

iPhone 6 plus

The iPhone 6 plus was clearly created to counter the sale of the 5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 4; the reason behind this is because the iPhone 6 plus has a screen size of 5.5-inches which is a surprising move. However Apple has done a great job with the iPhone 6 plus, it looks amazing and it’s the first time Samsung will face some lethal competition for the Galaxy Note models.

Once again the leaks were accurate, Apple has switched from a glass back to an aluminium chassis. The available colours for both models will be silver, gold and space grey. Other major changes for both models is the power button which has now been moved to the side for easier accessibility. Apple has also done a great job with boosting the durability of their phone so people won’t suffer as much if they drop their phone on its back.

Display

iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 plus

As I talked about previously iPhone 6 has a display size of 4.7- inches and the iPhone 6 plus has a screen size of 5.5-inches; there was no doubt from fans and tech heads that Apple was going to significantly increase the screen sizes. However there may be a problem with the resolution despite it being upped too.

The previous iPhone model had a resolution of 1704×960 whilst the new iPhone 6 plus has a resolution of 1920×1080 which will be significantly noticeable. However the Samsung Galaxy note 4 and the LG G3 will sport the new 2K resolution which is 2560×1440.

As for the iPhone 6 owners they will have to suffice with a 1334×750 which is still behind the 1080p displays; which is disappointing since most phones are stepping up from 1080p displays. Also the iPhone 6 plus gets a 401ppi increase whilst the iPhone 6 will remain with 326ppi.

Performance

Apple has done an amazing job with the specs on both phones. The iPhone 6 and the 6 plus will sport the A8 which is a 64-bit CPU; Apple has also said that the A8 provides the user with 50% and 20% increase in performance for graphics. This is possibly one of the biggest moves Apple has made with boosting performance since they released the first iPhone.

Both iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus will have the M8 motion coprocessor, the M8 like the M7 will be used for fitness applications, it will also be able to notice when the user is running, cycling and the level of elevation.

Wireless capabilities

Both models will be integrated with 150Mbit capable LTE, however neither models will get the LTE advanced capability which allows for over 300Mbit capability. All of this means that the user is able to use 4G anywhere in the world without any trouble.

Camera

Apple was never big on the camera capabilities since both the Apple iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus will remain with an eight megapixel camera which was also on the previous models (iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c)

Apple has however improved the sensors for the cameras, the sensors will allow the cameras to take in 81% more light. Also two new features have been upgraded which is the true tone flash and a more realistic flash lighting. Also autofocus times are cut in half and the face and smile detection now work a lot faster.

Also alike most of the new smartphones out there the iPhone 6 also have OIS which allows the phone to move the lens to minimise the amount of blur when a picture is taken. The iPhone 6 plus weirdly has to put up with digital image stabilisation, despite not being as effective as OIS Apple must have come up with something to prevent blur.

Front camera

Both models has gained some features such as the HDR, improved face detection and burst mode for better ‘selfies’. The resolution of the front camera however is a terrible 1.2mp.

Video

Video for both models is pretty much the same, both models deliver 1080p recording at either 30fps and 60fps and 120-240fps for slow motion. People however were expecting 4K recording, sadly Apple hasn’t added this feature onto their new phones.

Memory

Apple has finally added the 128GB memory option for the customers to choose from. However Apple only allows microSD storage of only up to 16GB.

Battery life

Apple has boosted the battery life in both models, which are:

Audio, Wi-Fi browsing increased by 10%

3G browsing increased by 20%

3G talk time increased by 40%

Standby remains the same

These may seem like a minor improvement but during use it should be fairly noticeable.

In the iPhone 6 plus however Apple uses the size of the phone to benefit battery life which are

Audio increased by 50%

Video increased by 40%

Wi-Fi browsing and LTE browsing 20%

Pricing

The pricing of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus is expectedly quite expensive, but if you’re looking for a smaller phone for a smaller price then it’s good to know that iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C are slightly cheaper.

As for the availability for the phone people are able to make pre-orders by 12th September from most large UK networks. By the 19th September both phones will go on sale.
